With Donald Trump leading the charge, this election cycle has confirmed for many moderate and progressive Christians that the platform of the Republican Party has very little in common with the the teachings of Jesus. They seem to be almost tripping over one another to further marginalize the poor, the strangers, and the downtrodden in the United States.
However: faith knows no party allegiance as this report from Baptist News Global shows. Democrats are equally culpable in, for example, championing payday lenders — a practice that actively targets the poor and traps them in a cycle of debt. It is pretty hard to square this with the teachings of any religion, or any basic sense of humanity and decency. As Christians we especially need to be more in tune to this kind of legal immorality that favors no one but the wealthy economically, and not even the wealthy spiritually.
