Faith in Consumerism

We’ve all heard that “consumerism is America’s true religion” or some variation on the theme so many times that we don’t think much about what that really means anymore.  

We all like to shop for stuff.  We all know we should worry less about junk we don’t need.  

But really, as Dr. Rittenhouse explains in his guest post on Sightings, there’s a lot more at stake.

If we use the definition of religion that the theologian Paul Tillich does (“as whatever individuals use to answer the question of existential meaning for their lives”), then we can start to see just how damaging our obsession with consuming really is.  Obsession isn’t even the right word — “faith” is.
